Slain LTTE chief Prabhakaran's mother dead
Slain LTTE chief V Prabhakaran's mother, who was suffering from multiple ailments like diabetes and heart problem, died today in a hospital in Sri Lanka's northern Jaffna town.
She was 81.
"Parvathi Pillai has passed away this morning and I paid my last respects to her," K Sivajilingam, a former MP of the pro-LTTE Tamil National Alliance (TNA), said on phone from Jaffna.
"She was being treated at the Valvettithurai divisional hospital in Jaffna where she died," he said.
Valvettithurai, the home town of Prabhakaran, is a fishing village north of Jaffna.
When Parvathi Pillai was admitted to hospital last month, she was already partially paralysed. Lately, she sunk into a major depression and stopped eating as her three remaining children, settled abroad, were not ready to visit Sri Lanka, though they were helping her financially.
Her two married daughters live in Toronto in Canada and Chennai respectively, while her son Manoharan is based in Denmark.
"I have informed her son and daughters about the death and funeral arrangements will be finalised after discussions with close relatives," Sivajilingam said.
Parvathi Pillai, whose husband Thiruvengadam Velupillai died in January 2010 in Jaffna, was deported last year when she landed in Chennai for treatment. Before that, she had been living in Malaysia.
After her deportation last year, she was placed under the protective custody of Sri Lankan military before being released.
She stayed at a lodge in Colombo for a short period until she was moved to her native place at Valvettithurai.
