drowns at Dubai Pool

The eight year old daughter Nandana of popular playback singer K.S. Chitra drowned in a swimming pool at a villa in Emirates Hills, Dubai.  The young girl was immediately rescued and rushed to a hospital in Jebel Ali, where she succumbed.

chitra and her husband Vijayashankar considered their daughter Nandana as a true gift from god as they were blessed with a daughter after nearly fifteen years of marriage. The singer always used to say that she got Nandana after praying for 15 years to Lord Krishna.

The incident happened at the home of the singer’s sister, where Chitra, along with her daughter, Nandana, and husband were staying. Chitra and her family reached Dubai on Tuesday evening to participate in a musical concert celebrating compositions of A. R. Rahman at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium this evening. Chitra always used to take daughter along with her for the music shows as Nandana is believed to be born with Down syndrome.

“The doors leading to the pool were open at the villa. She slipped into it and drowned. The singer is in complete shock” said a source close to the family.

Confirming her death, the Indian consulate in Dubai said it was in touch with the family.

Concert organisers said the show, which will see popular singers — A R Rahman’s sister A R Rehna, Hariharan, Naresh Iyer, Sadhna Sargam and Benny Dayal — will go on as scheduled. Troupe members will start the show with a special prayer for the little girl.

“In fact, we had arranged for an executive room at a hotel in Dubai. However, the singer was keen to provide her daughter with the comforts of a home. She wanted to ensure a safe environment for her daughter and opted to stay with her older sister in Emirates Hills,” said the concert organiser.
