The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhgam (AIADMK) supremo J Jayalalithaa has emerged a clear winner in the assembly election 2011 in Tamil Nadu, putting the spotlight back on woman power. Jayalalithaa returns to power for a third time defeating the Dravida Munnetra Kazhgam (DMK)-Congress alliance.

She emerged victorious from the Srirangam constituency defeating her DMK rival N. Anand by a margin of 41,848 votes. Jayalalithaa who maintained a steady lead from the first round itself, did not look back.

The thumping win of Ms. Jayalalithaa, was quite on the expected lines. The cloud of uncertainty over the outcome of this Assembly election cleared as soon as the counting started on Friday morning when the AIADMK and its allies – the DMDK, Left parties and a few smaller parties – established lead from a majority of seats. With her allies, she has won 203 of the state’s 234 assembly seats – a skyscraper of a victory in a bitterly-fought political landscape.

The Congress, which contested in 63 seats, suffered humiliation, as it could manage to win only 5 seats, one of its worst performances in the last four decades.

This is her 6th Assembly electoral fray ever since she began contesting in 1989. She contested from Bodinayakkanur in 1989. In 1991 elections, she contested from two constituencies, Kangeyam and Burgur seats and registered handsome victories in both.

Ms. Jayalalithaa preferred to retain the Burgur seat and resigned from Kangeyam. She suffered a defeat at the hands of DMK novice E. G. Sugavanam in Burgur in 1996 elections.

In the 2001 Assembly elections, her nomination for all the four constituencies were rejected. After the AIADMK captured power in the state, she contested the by-election from Andipatti constituency in Theni district in 2002 and got elected to Assembly.

In the last election, Ms. Jayalalithaa was returned from Andipatti constituency for the second consecutive term, to become the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.

Jayalalithaa on her victory speech in Jaya TV Friday, said: “Wherever I went in the last three years…the people were totally disgusted with DMK and were waiting for a chance to vent their anger against the DMK government. Once they got the opportunity, they showed their anger and resentment in no uncertain terms”
